Basil

Description:

Basil is one of the most popular herb in any kitchen and garden.  Ask any cook and you can bet they can tell you they have basil in their kitchen garden or cupboard.

Basil has a strong flavor that favors licorice and pepper.

Grows well in Zone 10.

Needs a warm, sheltered area in colder areas.  Thrives in hot climates.

pH 5.5-7.5

How to Grow Basil:

Basil seeds need to be planted outdoors after all danger of frost have gone.

Plant the seeds about 1/8 inch ofr 3mm then thin to 6 inches or 15 cm.

You can sow seeds indoors to give your Basil a better chance of surviving.

Be sure to prune away flowers as they start to grow otherwise you will be left with very bitter leaves.

Pinch back leaves at least once a week to encourage branching.

Basil is easily damaged by low temperatures be sure in the autumn to either transplant them to containers and take them indoors or prune off all the leaves and dry them for winter usuage.

Pest and Disease Prevention:

Do not plant Basil near any mint plants this will help prevent damage from common pests.

Basil is a good companion plant because it repels aphids, mites and other pests.  So plant basil around your other herbs to keep those pests away.

  • Basil the Sweet Herb
Article: Basil is my favorite of all the herbs because it is so versatile and easy to grow. Those of you who follow my recipes site will know that I like to grow my own herbs and as basil is normally ready to eat just 6-weeks after planting I naturally use it often.
