Preventing Diseases
First thing you need to do before you purchase any established plants from a local greenhouse is to inspect the plants for mildew, bugs and reject any that look sluggish or unhealthy. Be sure the greenhouse is a reputable greenhouse, offers plenty of light and water to the plants.
Look for discolored leaves or wilting flowers
Many diseases require moisture so be sure that your plants are in a well drained area of your garden, preferably in a raised bed. It doesn' take much to make a raised bed even a few 2x4's around the garden with added garden soil (not soil from your backyard) will help keep your beds well drained.
Be careful not to over water your plants.
If you are unsure if your plants have a disease do some research on line or take a leaf sample to your local greenhouse and talk to a plant expert, they should be able to tell you if your plant has a disease and what you need to do to bring your plants back to good health.
Be sure you use mulch around your plants and a good compose to help nourish and protect your plants roots.
What to do if you spot problems:
- Mildew: Take action right away go get a damp towel and wipe the leaves off.
- Leaves or stems are speckled or Slivery: Spray the plant with a soap solution.
- Leaves and stems have small, hard scales: Gently scrape off the scales off with your fingernail.
- Leaves or shoots have white spots: Remove effected leaves and spray the rest of the plant with a soapy solution, its mildew.
