Description:
Sage grows weill in zones 5-10 planted in full sun to partial shade.
Ideal soil for growing sage is well-drained garden soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0 .
Sage is easy to grow and is a shubby perennial with an aromatic scent.
You can use sage as fresh cooking or dry it for later usage and safe has medicinal uses.
How to Grow Sage:
You can start sage indoors by seed in the later part of winter or in early spring.
You can plant established plants outside as soon as all fear of frost is gone.
Be sure to plant the plants about 1 2/3 feet to 2 feet apart to allow good air circulation. Trim back exisiting plants to encourage further growth.
After a few years you may need to propogate by taking cuttings and planting them in the ground, as older bushes start to decline.
Be sure to remove flowers when they start as the flowers will take away from the leaves.
You can plant sage around cabbages, carrots, strawberries and tomatoes to increase the flavor of these vegetables and fruits.
Pest and Disease Prevention:
Small green caterpillars can eat the leaves, remove the caterpillars by hand or prune off the leaves that they are eating.
Sometimes depending on the area you live you may have trouble with snails and slugs. Other than that sage is not prone to pest or diseases.
