Grapeseed Oil in Skin Care Products

Grapeseed oil is a common component of skin care products because of its rejuvenating effect on stressed or damaged tissues. It is also a popular carrier oil in aromatherapy, leaving your skin smooth and silky without the greasy feeling that many other oils leave on your skin.

This is another example of a natural oil being preferred to processed or refined oil, and although a refined form of grapeseed oil is used, that is essential and involves heat because the cold-pressed oil is unusable, being too thick and sludge-like in consistency. So what are the properties of this oil that makes it such a popular ingredient of skin care products.

Its principal active ingredients are fatty acids (a large number of them) and the highly antioxidant proanthocyanadins. The latter are very potent antioxidants that help to prevent the free radical degradation of skin cells that leads to wrinkling and premature aging. Antioxidants are common to just about every skin care preparation on the market, and it is the nature of these, and the form in which they are presented when rubbed into your skin, that is important.

Note the two important words in that last sentence:  'form' and 'into'.  'Form', because antioxidants in their natural form are far more potent than those contained in over-refined oils. Refining tends to remove the active agents in natural oils, and this can have a very detrimental effect on your skin.  Sure, you can initially feel a positive result, because oils are smooth and therefore can make your skin feel smooth.

However, by destroying or removing the natural antioxidants within them, the oil becomes no more than a cosmetic application without any active effect on the substances that cause your skin to age and wrinkle. Natural, or heat refined, grapeseed oil, on the other hand, retains its antioxidant effect and can destroy the oxidizing free radicals that destroy the cells that make up your skin.

This destruction ages your skin, causing it to wrinkle, and the oxidizing free radicals also oxidize small fatty deposits just under your skin turning them dark brown. These are what are known as age spots or liver spots, and can be prevented by the regular application of a good skin care product, rich in natural oils with their full complement of antioxidants.

Te other word stressed above was 'into'.  It is no good just rubbing a skin care oil 'onto' your skin - it must be rubbed 'into' it.  The oil must penetrate the pores of the skin and get into the subcutaneous layers in order to get at the free radicals that are destroying your skin cells. By doing that, you can keep your skin not only supple, but also looking young and prevent liver spots.

The normal structure of the epithelial cells of your skin can be maintained, and your nerve cells strongly supported, by maintaining the integrity of the structure of the cell membranes, which are what the free radicals attack.

Used regularly, grape seed oil can reduce the visibility of stretch marks, and can help the skin around your eyes look younger and less likely to sag.  Being non-comedogenic, it can be used with acne products to help moisturize the skin and make it feel more supple.

Grapeseed oil is another of the natural oils that should be used as a natural skin care product that improves the look and feel of your skin without promoting any undesirable effects that require the use of other chemicals to overcome, as most synthetic skin care products do.
