You may ask- Why do my legs hurt and cramp
up at night?
I remember vividly my fifth month of pregnancy
when I began to be awoken by leg cramps as I tried to sleep.
The pain would be so great that I would find myself holding
my leg tightly for fear that if I let go of the leg or moved
my calf in the slightest, the leg cramp would go on indefinitely.
I learned from my doctor that these leg cramps were caused
by the sudden weight gain of pregnancy. Unfortunately, he
also indicated that I would be carrying more weight and
suffering more leg cramps as the pregnancy progressed. I
inquired if there was anything I could do to prevent these
terrible leg cramps.
I was fortunate to have a doctor who could
give me a variety of options. After trying each of the options
out, I found that a good soak before bed with some Epsom
salt helped keep the leg cramps to a minimum. But, as a
result of the salt my skin became very dry. I tried to counter
the dry skin with bath oils, but this made the bath tub
so slippery I was afraid I'd fall. This would have been
worse than the dry skin, or even leg cramps.
So with this I went back to my doctor to
let him know that the bath and salts were preventing
my leg cramps, but I needed some way around the dry skin.
The doctor said that Dead Sea salts were a very popular treatment.
He said to be careful that the Dead Sea salts I get are
the real thing, as many companies use the name but not the
actual Dead Seas salt.
Excited at this news, I immediately studied
up on the healing properties of Dead Sea salt. I ordered
some Dead Seas salts and waited impatiently. The day they
arrived I took a mid-day bath in them. I found the bath
so relaxing and pleasant that I decided to bathe again that
evening, this time with some lavender as well. I had such
a wonderful night of sleep that I found myself hooked on
using Dead Sea salt.
But the amazing part was not just the healing
affects of the Dead Sea salts, but that these salts from
the Dead Sea didn't dry out my skin the way the other bath
salts did. One of the theories about the success of Dead
Sea salt is that it is caused by the unusual 27% concentration
of salt, as opposed to the 3% concentration found in most
sea water. But, Dead Sea salts also contain significant,
unique quantities of other healing substances such as magnesium
and potassium, bromide and more than 15 other naturally
occurring unprocessed minerals. These mineral combinations
found in Dead Sea salts seem to offset any skin drying effects
by providing natural moisturizing effects.
If you do get a leg cramp, the best thing
you can do is to immediately straighten out your leg. Then
point your heel forward as you gently point your toes back
towards your knee. The purpose is to stretch out your calf
muscles to the point of slight tension until the spasm eases
off and the pain fades. At that point, you can apply a hot
water bottle to warm the leg or perform a gentle muscle
massage. Walking for a few minutes may also be helpful.
Always take the appearance of leg cramps
seriously, as in some cases the pain could actually be caused
by a blood clot. Blood clots require immediate medical care.
Blood clots are more common during pregnancy. The symptoms
to watch for are constant pain and swelling. Leg cramps
tend to come and go and they are not accompanied by swelling.
Fortunately, the circulatory benefit of soaking with Dead
Sea salts may help prevent these clots as well.
Tips for keeping leg cramps at bay:
If you do get a cramp, immediately stretch
your calf muscles: Straighten your leg, heel first, and
gently flex your toes back toward your shins. It might hurt
at first, but it will ease the spasm and the pain will gradually
go away. You can relax the cramp by massaging the muscle or warming
it with a hot-water bottle. Walking around for a few minutes
may help, too.
What if the pain persists?
If your muscle pain is constant and not just an occasional
cramp, or if you notice swelling or tenderness in your leg,
call your doctor. In rare cases, a pregnant woman may develop
a blood clot, which requires immediate medical attention.
This too is another reason why a dead seas salt soak is
beneficial it helps increase circulation!

The role of lavender oil in relieving perineal discomfort
following childbirth: A blind randomized clinical trial.
Journal of Advanced Nursing, 19:89-96.
The single-blind clinical trial randomized 635 mothers into
three groups using pure lavender oil, a synthetic lavender
oil, and an inert substance as a bath additive respectively
for 10 days following normal childbirth. The analysis results
of daily discomfort scores showed no statistically significant
difference between groups. However, women using lavender
oil as a bath additive had lower mean discomfort scores
between the 3rd and 5th days, when the mother usually experienced
the highest discomfort."
